Renal Replacement Therapy

Kidney replacement therapies are used as medical procedures for chronic renal failure or severe kidney failure (also referred as Chronic Kidney Disease stage 5 end or Last-Stage Renal failure). It is normally required when approximately 90% or more of kidney function is lost.

Once it is confirmed that renal replacement therapy will be necessary, the patient and his doctor should discuss the benefits and disadvantages of the three types of renal failure therapy:

  • Peritoneal dialysis
  • Hemodialysis
  • Renal Transplantation (living donor or diseased organ donor, known as cadaveric donor).

Note: A Renal Transplant may not be considered if the patient has Tuberculosis or a recent history of cancer, advanced heart, lung or liver disease and if the patient is a smoker, alcohol or drug dependant.
